Most of our time is spent building aluminum awnings and carports. There are many advantages in aluminum over other materials. The biggest advantage is that they are maintenance free. Between the baked on enamel finish and the extruded frame work they will not rot and the paint will not wear off.
Cost is another advantage, aluminum is the best value for the dollar. They are less expensive than wood or canvas patio covers, initially, and over the years.
Building with lumber will have many advantages over other types of construction. Awnings can be built stronger, last longer and blend with current surroundings better than any other type construction. The cost will vary greatly depending on the type of lumber, insulation, wiring, roofing material and post covers.
It is also easier to get a permit for building add on rooms under wood structures than it is the aluminum type. If an enclosed room is in your future plans be sure to study local codes and see what your options are. It is a lot cheaper to build the cover right from the start than to have to redo it later to meet code.
The disadvantages with wood are mainly the cost and the maintenance.
The cover to the right is ready for drywall and stucco. Once painted it will look like it was made at the same time as the home. The top side will get roofing felt and shingles to match the home. Now is also a good time to add insulation if a room will be built under it in the future.Another popular option is the canvas or fabric type awning. These can be permanent or retractable. A retractable cover has the advantage of being able to keep the cover rolled up and out of the way of storms and for the times the warmth of the sun is wanted.
Color selections are plentiful for the fabric patio covers, match or accent just about anything.
Less popular choices are vinyl and steel. Steel will last forever and vinyl looks great when it is new. We don't deal with either but that does not mean you should not have a look and see if it's for you.
